Mental Approach: To be a good infielder you must have the courage to want the ball hit to you. Developing this mind set is essential and coaches must help players to develop this attitude.
Fundamental Approach: There is a very important fundamental for infielders when it comes to fielding a ground ball. It is having the glove down and working up, and not have the glove up and working down. You are always quicker working into your body than working away from your body. I always equate it to putting your hand on a hot stove. Which way would you take your hand off a hot stove when you touched it? Would you take your hand off towards your body or away from your body? Yes the answer is into or towards your body because you are always quicker reacting that way.
Remember, most infielders get beat right at the end when the ball gets to them because the ball either stays down or comes up and they are not in position to react to it. If the ball stays down your glove is there and if the ball comes up at the end, you are very quick to work up or into your body to react to the hop.
